A bank that answers to a small number of families.
Gardner, Ripley & Hale is owned by its partners, lends its own capital, and keeps what families place with it under one roof in Windsor. The arrangement has held since 1818.

A partnership that lends its own money.
GRH Bank is owned by twenty-two working partners and by nobody else. The name on the charter is still the three who signed it: Gardner, Ripley and Hale. There are no outside shareholders, no holding company, and no plan to list. Profits are retained or paid to the people who earned them, in that order.
Credit is decided by a committee of four. Three must agree. Any one may decline without giving a reason, and does. The rule has cost the house business in good years and kept it solvent in every bad one.
The Desk is the part of the bank a family actually meets: eight bankers, one file each, and a standing rule that whoever picks up has already read it.
What the house holds to.
Three habits, older than anyone now working here. They are not written down anywhere else.
-
Solvency before growth.
The bank keeps more capital than the rules require and lends less than it could. It has cleared every panic since its charter without being rescued. Growth arrives, or does not, as a consequence.
-
Discretion as a habit.
The house does not advertise, publish client names, or speak to the press. A family’s affairs are known to its banker, to the credit committee when credit is sought, and to nobody else. Statements go out by post in plain envelopes.
-
Someone answers.
Money moves at inconvenient hours. A call to the Desk at three in the morning reaches a banker who knows the file, not a menu. The person who releases the wire is the one who recognizes your voice.

Where we are.
One office, by design. A second address would mean a second credit committee, or a first one that met less often. Families abroad are served from Windsor, by telephone, at their hour rather than ours.
The building has been the bank’s since the charter. Vault 1 is beneath it. Visitors are received by appointment and met at the door by their banker, not at a desk by someone else.

Relationships begin the old way: a call, a name, a banker. There is no form to fill in tonight.
