Leave a name and a number. A banker calls back, not a salesperson: the house has nothing to sell and nobody on commission.

New relationships begin by introduction, and the minimum is $10,000,000. If someone sent you, say who. It shortens the first call.

Ask for a call.

Write as much or as little as you like. The reply comes by telephone.

The Desk replies by telephone within one working day. Nothing you write here goes into a marketing list; the house keeps none.

There is one office, by design. The house has kept the same door on Main Street since 1818, and a family's papers do not travel between branches because there are none. Visits are by appointment, arranged through your banker.

What happens when you call

  1. One of nine bankers answers. There is no menu and no queue.

  2. If your banker is off the Desk, the one who answers opens your file while you are still saying your name.

  3. Instructions are read back to you, then confirmed in writing before the day ends.

  4. Calls are recorded for accuracy. Where a recording and a written instruction differ, the writing governs.

The light is on.

The bank keeps one office and one telephone number. A call at any hour of any day reaches a banker in Windsor who has your file open before you finish saying your name.

Nothing about the Desk is automated. Nobody is on call from home. The rotation has not had a gap since 1934.
